The
Steel
Skyblade Knives are handcrafted
from one of the best stainless steels available - ATS-34.
Unlike the common surgical stainless steel used by
many commercial knife companies,
ATS-34 can be heat treated and hardened to 61 RC for
exceptional edge holding and
still retain its flexibility and strength.
UPDATE 3/2007
- Skyblade now offers Crucible CPM S30V
stainless steel on a limit basis
in their custom line of knives. At this time, it is only available in
special orders.
CPM S30V is the latest premier stainless steel available for knifemaking.
It has
exceptional strength, corrosion resistance and edge-holding. S30V is
approximately
400% tougher, 200% more corrosion resistant and 25% better at
edge-holding.
Below is a paragraph
from Crucible, the manufacturer of this fine steel.
CPM S30V is a
martensitic stainless steel designed to offer the best combination of
toughness, wear resistance and corrosion resistance. Its chemistry has been
specially
balanced to promote the formation of vanadium carbides which
are harder and more
effective than chromium carbides in
providing wear resistance. CPM S30V offers
substantial improvement in
toughness over other high hardness steels
such as 440C and
D2, and its corrosion resistance is
equal to or better than 440C in various environments.
The CPM process produces very homogeneous, high quality
steel characterized by superior
dimensional stability, grindability,
and toughness compared to steels produced by
conventional processes.
